Does this sound like a good idea for a story about genies?

I want to write a fantasy series with a female protagonist that is a genie. I don't want to include anything about three wishes or lamps and bottles and want to make them unique. I was wondering if this was a good idea: genies being an immortal race that is the product of necromancy, a forbidden art that only magicians can use. But I'm not sure what to go from there. Any ideas?
