Can I dye my bangs blonde without bleach?

My hair is dark brown, and I'd like to dye it soft black with blonde bangs. I don't want to kill my hair by bleaching it, but I'm worried they will turn orange. The stylist said it would cost $40 to dye just my bangs, but I don't have that kind of money. Is it possible to get it to be an average blonde color by just using a box? I'd like to do this semi-soon. Thank you!
